The Department of Mechanical Engineeringwas established in the year 2012-2013. The Department has proposed research projects from Government agencies such as the DRDO, DST, IREDA. and consultancy works from industries such as Salem steel plant, MRF and other companies in and around Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The research in the Department is concentrated mostly in three thrust areas namely Nanotechnology, Material Testing and Alternate fuels, while Supply Chain Management, Material science and Tribology have also evolved into areas of research. The faculty of the Department closely interacts with the industry in keeping up with the latest trends in research and development as well as the training of the students and development of curriculum in accordance with the global trends. The department offers its faculty several facilities for initiating and sustaining research activities by providing access to the latest books, journals, software and equipment required. The curriculum of the department academic programs is being subjected to continuous assessment by keeping in view the latest trends and developments around the world. The Department has state-of-the-art labs, workshops and infrastructure to facilitate students in acquiring hands on experience in addition to classroom learning. Further, students are encouraged to organize/participate in technical fests and other academic activities in accordance with ISTE and Institution of Engineers (India) guidelines to develop leadership skills. The department of Mechanical Engineering strongly recommends the continuation of education and the development of research skills of the individuals. The undergraduate curriculum requires mandatory completion of all the theoretical and laboratory courses offered by the department irrespective of the area of specialization. In addition to academics and research, the department focuses on guiding the students towards discipline and responsibility, thus aiding in the development of model citizens for the society.
Engineering students doing courses in various branches are to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge so as to serve the society in improving the living standards. The workshop practical in the first year is intended to impart basic knowledge of various hand tools and their usage in different sections of manufacturing; they include Carpentry, Fitting, welding. The intentions of AICTE in insisting on the provision of these workshop facilities apart from other advanced laboratories of individual branches is therefore very clear.
BASIC WORKSHOP LABORATORY
Though engineers are not going to become carpenters or blacksmiths or skilled workmen on shop floor, their exposure to these vocational trades provides them a bird's eye view of basic practical activities associated with all branches of engineering .This practical knowledge helps them as a foundation when they do other practical. It also helps them when they occupy managerial positions in understanding the activities and practical difficulties of skilled workmen who are involved in production of goods in any industry.
MATERIAL TESTING AND METALLURGY LABORATORY
Material Selection forms an inseparable part of the Mechanical Engineering Design process. Suggesting a suitable material for a particular application, which can withstand the stresses that will be developed due to various loads without any failure, is of utmost importance because most of the materials are subjected to different kind of stresses due to various types of loads acting on them.
The failure behavior of the material due to various types of loads should be understood properly before suggesting a particular material for specific application. So in order to suggest a material, one should have sound knowledge in mechanical properties of materials. Mechanical properties like Hardness, Yield Strength, Ultimate Compressive Strength, Impact Strength etc. will give a clear idea of how a material fails under various types of loads.
This laboratory makes the student to prepare and observe the microstructure of pure metals like Copper and alloys like Mild Steel, Brass, etc. It makes familiar with mounting of the specimens for microscopic examination. Jominy End-Quench test to measure the hardenability of steels is also provided.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS LABORATORY
The subject of Manufacturing Process I, II, III has been dealt with intensively in all engineering curricula at most technical universities both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Several textbooks and reference books describing details of machine tool types, constructional details, manufacturing, assembly and testing procedures and metal cutting theory have been published over the last several decades.
Theoretical study of any subject is incomplete without practical application of the principles. Augmenting the theoretical study of machine tools in most schools is the practical laboratory course on metal cutting and machine tool practice.
FLUID MECHANICS AND MACHINERY LABORATORY
Engineering is applying scientific knowledge to find solutions for problems of practical importance. A basic knowledge of Fluid mechanics and machinery is essential for all the scientists and engineers because they frequently come across a variety of problems involving flow of fluids such as in aerodynamics, Force of fluid on structural surfaces, fluid transport.
The experiments described in this lab are part of the curriculum of "Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machinery Laboratory" for the degree course in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
DYNAMICS OF MACHINES LABORATORY
Mechanical engineering systems invariably consist of moving parts. With ever increasing emphasis on high speed machines (for higher productivity), effects of accelerating/decelerating moving masses plays a significant role. This course aims to equip the student with fundamental knowledge of dynamics of machines so that he can appreciate problems of dynamic force balance, transmissibility of forces, and isolation of systems, vibrations, instrumentation and standards.
THERMAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY
Study of Heat transfer is the major term in thermal engineering lab. Engines are converting heat energy into mechanical energy. Performance of engines, refrigeration unit and air conditioning unit are evaluated in this lab. Properties such as viscosity, flash and fire point, calourific value of oil and fuel are evaluated.
PROJECT LABORATORY
The Projects Laboratory has a key role in promoting practical and hands-on education throughout the undergraduate careers of Mechanical Engineering students. The Projects Lab is where students apply their knowledge of theory to improve their skills on the design, analysis, implementation, and experimentation of new Technologies. Our goal is to provide a state-of-the-art environment where students become proficient at both the physical and creative skills needed in the workforce.
COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
The department of Mechanical Engineering is equipped with latest commercial software required for research and development. The department acquired licensed versions of AutoCAD, CATIA, PRO-E and ANSYS etc. A number of faculty and students have already made excellent use of this software for their research. also a number of computational and analytical research projects based on the software are in progress.
In addition to the CAD laboratory, the department also owns a computer lab equipped with AUTOCAD software to train students in computer aided design
