by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
An Emergency Response & Road Safety Awareness Training Program was conducted by the National Service Scheme ( NSS) of Sri Ganesh Engineering College, implemented by ALERT and supported by Ford. The initiative aimed to create awareness among young individuals about the importance of t imely response and preparedness during emergencies. The program sought to empower students with l i fe- saving skills and promote community participation in emergency care and road safety.
The session began with an introduction to the Good Samaritan Law ( 2019 ) , which encourages bystanders to help accident v i c t ims without f ear of l egal consequences. Trainers f rom ALERT emphasized that every second counts during emergencies and demonstrated key f i rst- a id t echniques. Students l earned the three v i tal s t eps ( C– A– B) Circulation, Airway, and Breathing a l ong with pulse checking, breath assessment, and proper body posture for accident v i c t ims. They were a l so t rained to ensure scene safety, check for response, and call for an ambulance e f f ectively. The resource persons explained the difference between Basic Life Support ( BLS) and Advanced Life Support ( ALS) ambulances and demonstrated CPR t echniques, s t ressing that v i c t ims of snakebites should not be placed in the recovery position.
The training program provided a valuable platform for students to gain practical knowledge about first aid and emergency response. It successfully instilled a sense of social responsibility and confidence among participants to act promptly in critical situations. With such initiatives, the NSS Unit of Sri Ganesh Engineering College, in collaboration with ALERT and Ford, continues to advance the mission of building a community of trained citizens capable of saving lives in times of need.
